!-->The Victorian Government and Minister Sonya Kilkenny's planning reforms are an unprecedented attack on our built and cultural heritage.
But we can do something about it —
The first way to protect Victoria's heritage is to petition the Legislative Council Inquiry into the Planning Reforms and the Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny to do something about the Victorian Government's radical plans.
Then, you can send a second petition to your elected Legislative Council representatives to tell them to back heritage and community over planning chaos and dysfunction.
Despite the Government's claims that heritage won't be affected, Heritage Council, Planning Panels Victoria, Historical Society, National Trust, experts, community groups, and the parliamentarians who established the Inquiry, have expressed serious concerns about the impacts for local, state, national and world heritage places.
We're running out of time – the Inquiry is writing its report right now and could deliver it to Parliament at any moment.
An estimated 59,454 or more heritage places could be directly impacted in new activity centres, including Broadmeadows, Camberwell, Chadstone, Epping, Essendon, Moorabbin, and Preston. That's about a third of all of Victoria's local heritage! Further damaging rules impact the other two thirds.
We can achieve housing density, while also conserving and enhancing our cultural heritage, but only if heritage remains protected by law.
VC257, VC267 and VC274 are radical planning reforms damaging to Victoria's cherished heritage buildings, homes and streetscapes.
Preservation of heritage is not just an aesthetic choice but also a cultural obligation. Our heritage sites form an integral part of our community identity and historical narrative. Great design comes from responding to heritage places. Adaptive reuse and retrofit are essential for addressing climate change.
Join us in urging the Victorian Government to commit to a revised approach in their planning reforms that conserves and enhances our precious heritage.
